One of the cool things about the Internet is that anything posted is ALWAYS findable online…

Virtually no matter where.

Case in point – back in the 1980s, instead of online forums and social media, there were online “groups” in the thousands for just about any interest imaginable – losing weight, Chinese culture, romance, cooking, pet birds, football, xksh and more!

It was called ‘netnews’ or ‘usenet’ and let me tell you…

It was glorious (I met fiancee #… 4? on soc.culture.asian.american . ’twas my 2nd LDR (long distance relationship)… now that I think on it, my first LDR was found on soc.culture.china too. Ah, memories).

Back in 1989, folks here in the States could follow what was happening on Tienanmen Square during the crackdown by the country government (fun fact – that was called the first war that was fought with eMail and fax – people involved would fax out real-time updates that would then be distributed to all who were interested). And to this day… you can see where collections of that data resides.

Which brings me to this goodie by Jeremy and James!

Netnews never disappeared… it just evolved into Dejanews and then…

Google Groups.
